Are you getting desperate to slip away from the hectic pace of work and wander some of the less travelled back roads of the UK? Or maybe you want to load up the entire family for a memorable vacation of adventure and exploration. There are amazing sights to see, villages to visit and roads to follow, whether you choose the solitude provided by travelling alone, or you have invited friends and family to share the experience.

Before you head out for parts unknown, there are a few important matters to consider. Is your vehicle in good running order? Some of these back country roads might be wonderful to visit but not great places in which to break down. Also, is your car insurance up-to-date and are you fully aware of what it covers? If you are less than satisfied, inquire about a free car insurance quote or check out other online car insurance quotes to make sure that you have enough coverage should the unexpected happen.

You might also want to check into lodgings if you plan to extend your trip over days or weeks. Some locations are more crowded than others during the holiday season and advance reservations are always a great idea, especially if you are the kind who likes to plan your trip and stick to your itinerary. If you prefer to go wherever the mood leads you, you may have to take your chances with accommodations.

The following road trips are guaranteed to be both refreshing and interesting:

• Atlantic Highway, England—Head west on A39 from Bridgewater (J23) for a breath-taking 217 km (135 mi) trip that pulls you into itself with wild hills on one side and equally wild coastline on the other. Stop at little-known villages along the way. If you bring your board, you can even squeeze in some surfing. End at Bude.

• Yorkshire Wolds, England—Northern England is known for its bucolic countryside, rolling hills and the quieter sounds of a less rushed rural landscape. Leave the M62 at J38 and drive up to Beverly. The 217 km (135 mi) route includes seaside charm and country towns such as Driffield and Pocklington, home of the famous Burnby Hall Gardens’ water lily collection. End at Howden.

• Island Circuit, Isle of Man—Sitting in the Irish Sea and drenched with Celtic culture and Norse heritage, this island offers a 121 km (75 mi) scenic excursion that starts and ends at Douglas, the island capital and ferry port. Travel counter-clockwise to enjoy the best sea views, and take your time to soak in the beauty of this sheltered island. Hike the only mountain, Snaefell for even more panoramic vistas.

• South-West Coast, Ireland—Rich farmlands and green river valleys are what Ireland is all about, but this 724 km (450 mi) trip will also lead you along sandstone hills and rocky shorelines harboring secret coves waiting to be explored. From Limerick, travel south by way of Blarney to Cork and Kinsale. Then turn west and gradually make your way back to Limerick on the N18 from Ardrahan. Of course, you’ll want to stop at a pub or two along the way.

• The Hebrides, Scotland— The 241 km (150 mi) of winding one-lane road that connects these islands offers a unique and rewarding experience, including an opportunity to visit the "Hebrides Stonehenge." Take time out for a little boat ride over to Kisimul Castle on its own little island, Castlebay. End your adventure on the island of Barra and catch a car ferry back to Oban to complete your trip.
